1. Message from the President
Ukraine, ISDRS and 60 years since the book of Silent Spring.
|
As we are painfully reminded of daily, Ukraine has been hit by an illegal and unjust war, hit by an aggressor who does not hesitate to attack civilians, cultural buildings, hospitals, schools and universities; who does not hesitate to commit war crimes. The situation remains deeply worrying.
|
ISDRS was early with a condemnation and stance. Such a statement of support and solidarity is important and should not be underestimated; I am grateful that the ISDRS Board could act so quickly. Research and higher education are true international activities and as university teachers and researchers we have strong networks with colleagues around the world. ISDRS is one of the oldest networks for scholars in sustainable development.

Research and education, where new knowledge is created and disseminated, are crucial for a sustainable future. Our universities have an important role to play; research-based education at our universities contribute to lifelong learning for people of all ages and is a fundamental human right. As a global network for transformative research on sustainable development, ISDRS is stronger than ever and will continue playing an important role.
|
But another thing is worth noting, which has not least been significant for the environmental movement of our time and our time's research on climate change. It is sixty years since the American marine biologist Rachel Carson published the book "Silent Spring". Over the years, Carson has been attacked by many, including by representatives of the chemical industry. The criticism has largely been about the pesticide DDT, which has been used in the control of malaria mosquitoes, among other things. Research since then has proven her right; societies have become less dependent on DDT and the environment has recovered from DDT pollution.
|
Carson and her work against DDT became a symbol for debaters who oppose all forms of regulation against the "free market". Such polarization, that "free market" would stand in opposition to science, has also been common in discussions about the climate since the end of the 20th century, however it is starting to become obsolete. Large and powerful players in business and the financial sector are well aware of the seriousness of climate change and more recently also biodiversity (just have a look at Stop Ecocide initiative[1]).
|
Recently, a new report was published by the Network for Greening the Financial System, entitled: "Central banking and supervision in the biosphere: An agenda for action on biodiversity loss, financial risk and system stability"[2]. The network consists of about eighty of the world's central banks and other major financial actors. They are convinced that natural values must be taken into account when making their decisions, that loss of biodiversity can have major economic consequences and poses a risk to economic stability.
|
Also in this respect, I am very proud of what ISDRS stands for and that our annual conferences enable the ISDRS community of scholars from all over the world to contribute with new knowledge for a sustainable development.

ISDRS New Professionals Group
|
The main goal of the ISDRS Mentorship Programme is to connect senior academics (mentor) with junior academics (mentee) in a meaningful way, and thereby creating a mutual benefit, and cementing a stronger relationship between all involved: the new professionals, the senior ones, and within ISDRS as a whole.
|
ISDRS Mentorship Programme was initiated in 2020 and ran successfully for the first time in 2021. Mentors and mentees were paired to talk about academic work/research, career and/or work-life balance, networking and professional contacts, etc. In addition, several inspiration events were held online or as face-to-face workshops to share experiences and set the future directions.
|

We welcome interested researchers to fill the following Google form to participate in this year’s mentorship programme:
|
- Mentors: ISDRS senior researchers (PhD's as a requirement). Mentors could be 1) University professors from ISDRS institutional members, 2) ISDRS topic group leaders 3) Board members, or other experienced members.
- Mentees: ISDRS master students, PhD candidates, postdoctoral researchers, junior researchers on short term contracts and assist./assoc. prof. on tenure tracks.
The application deadline is April 30, 2022. The paired results will be notified by late May.

The Department of Business Administration at Pontificia Universidad Javeriana invites applications for a position at the Assistant Professor level. We are seeking candidates in the areas of Strategy, Sustainability, and/or Corporate Social Responsibility. The start date is flexible.

Duties: Duties of a faculty member will include in varying proportions: a) teaching activities, b) research activities, and c) academic service activities.

Terms: Our working conditions include a start-up period with a 2-course teaching load per semester and the possibility to hire teaching and research assistants. We also provide incentives for publication as well as an attraction bonus (subject to certain requirements).

III International Meeting
Histories of Nature and Environments: More Than Just Biodiversity
|
|
The Centre for History (CH-ULisboa) of the University of Lisbon, the Centre for the Humanities (CHAM) of the NOVA University of Lisbon and the Centre for Administration and Public Policies (CAPP) of the University of Lisbon are pleased to be hosting the 3rd International Meeting Histories of Nature and Environments: More than just Biodiversity from the 24th to the 26th of November 2022. The meeting will take place in Peniche with the support of the city Hall.
|
Following the previous meetings and the discussion on the interaction between humans and the natural world and on landscape as a historical testimony and source for the study of the past, this third reunion aims to focus on the plurality of ecosystems and species, and the richness of the natural world, while addressing cultural and social diversities in their multiple entanglements with nature.
|
Ecocultural systems, or integrated 'natureculture' views, will be the main object of our discussions, considering that different species, both human and non-human, and their interrelationships, can be placed at the centre of the debate and be discussed as agents in historical and current narratives.
|
|
Grounded in the humanities for the environment, this is an inter- and multidisciplinary event that seeks to reach out to different scholars, academics, scientists, and stakeholders, and to involve various disciplinary approaches. The aim of this meeting is to promote a fruitful multidisciplinary exchange and an active debate on these issues with the contribution of all participants.

We are welcoming contributions from early stage to senior researchers, as well as from people outside academia, in the following suggested topic areas

The conference will be held in English and is open to submissions from any discipline and scholars in different stages, including ESRs, with interests in these fields. Potential participants should submit a proposal by May 15, 2022 to ihnemeeting3@gmail.com. Proposals must be sent in a Word document and include: Title; Name(s) of author(s); Institutional Affiliation; E-mail address; Topic area; Abstract - up to 300 words; Keywords – up to 5. Each author can only submit one proposal as first author.

Applicants will be notified of acceptance by July 1, 2022. The abstracts accepted in the conference will be available on-line. Maximum allotted time for presentations is 15 minutes.
|
|
At this moment, with information that global vaccination rates are increasing, we are confident in the possibility of holding an in-person meeting. In this case, national regulations regarding Covid-19 will be implemented. Nevertheless, we are also exploring the possibility of a hybrid (in-person/online) meeting format.
|
|
The meeting will be free of charge, but registration is mandatory.

International Symposium. Sustainability in the tourism sector: implementation and speech
The "International Symposium. Sustainability in the tourism sector: implementation and speech" aims to be a place for meeting between institutions, organisations, professionals and academics to analyse the current status sustainability in the tourism sector and the keys to greater sustainability in the future.
|
Participants are encouraged to present theoretical reflections, empirical results or practical and didactic experiences in the fields of management and development of sustainable business and its speech. The organisers consider that the plurality of perspectives and methods, as well as the exchange of experiences and reflections from different areas (engineering, architecture, social sciences, law, linguistics or marketing, to name a few), are essential to ensure the advancement of sustainability both at the theoretical level and in its application internship.

The symposium is organised by Tecnun-Escuela de Ingeniería of the University of Navarra and the Institute for Culture and Society (ICS) of the University of Navarra, at framework of project "KiNESIS: Alliances of knowledge for social innovation in the face of depopulation".

An open access social sustainability science research methods book has just been published entitled ‘Co-Creativity and Engaged Scholarship: Transformative Methods in Social Sustainability Research’. The book is one of a number of outputs produced by RECOMS, an H2020 Marie Sklodowska-Curie (MSCA) Innovative Training Network funded by the European Commission (No. 765389). The volume, edited by Prof. Alex Franklin (Coventry University), features 15 chapters by young and established sustainability researchers and offers a unique overview of transdisciplinary approaches to researching and communicating community environmental practice.
