The Malaysia conference will take place in the mid of Agenda 2030, seven years and a half after SDGs was first launched in 2015, and seven years and a half more towards the year 2030. It goes without saying that the most appropriate theme for the 2023 conference is to assess the 5P of SDGs: people, planet, prosperity, peace and partnership. Let us recall the commitment made by country leaders around the world to the 5P in 2015.

People
We are determined to end poverty and hunger, in all their forms and dimensions, and to ensure that all human beings can fulfil their potential in dignity and equality and in a healthy environment.

Planet
We are determined to protect the planet from degradation, including through sustainable consumption and production, sustainably managing its natural resources and taking urgent action on climate change, so that it can support the needs of the present and future generations.

Prosperity
We are determined to ensure that all human beings can enjoy prosperous and fulfilling lives and that economic, social and technological progress occurs in harmony with nature.

Peace
We are determined to foster peaceful, just and inclusive societies which are free from fear and violence. There can be no sustainable development without peace and no peace without sustainable development.

Partnership
We are determined to mobilize the means required to implement this Agenda through a revitalised Global Partnership for Sustainable Development, based on a spirit of strengthened global solidarity, focused in particular on the needs of the poorest and most vulnerable and with the participation of all countries, all stakeholders and all people.

Halfway through Agenda 2030, and in the midst of Covid-19 pandemic to endemic transition, people at every walk of life, are experiencing changes in their life, and governments are aligning their goals and targets to fit in the new ‘norms’. Against this background, researchers around the world are invited to share their work which assess the progress of SDGs and suggest new solutions that meet the needs of the 5P. Discussions will be organized along the traditional tracks of the conference based on the topic groups of ISDRS. Keynote and plenary sessions will also address the challenges of SDGs within the 5P context.

Don’t forget to nominate the best SD article from 2022!

The ISDRS serves as a central knowledge hub on research in sustainable development. To strengthen our role, we identify and honour the best research paper written every year. With this we intend to further stimulate solid research, but also their applicability to support introduction of solutions to our immense challenges. We will work with a participatory approach: everyone connected to the ISDRS can suggest nominations for such a ‘best research article’. A Jury with decide on a short list of nominated papers and after that again ISDRS members will vote to select the best article. The winners will be honoured during our annual Conference.

Upon recent developments in Ukraine

Today the Russian government has intensified its military operations in Ukraine, a nation invaded by Russia since 2014. The ISDRS Board and community are deeply disturbed and saddened by this militaristic Russian expansion, fuelled by purposive misinformation and false interpretations of historical realities, and deeply antithetical to genuine sustainable development and social justice.

We declare our strong solidarity with the free Ukraine and its people, and fully reject the military aggressions imposed by the Russian government. This represents a blatant violation of international law and a denial of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

As a global scientific community, ISDRS is committed to global peace and sustainable development, not war and overexploitation of nature and people. We harshly condemn this ongoing attack and demand an immediate end to all violence. We are in strong solidarity with the bright scholars and students at many higher education institutions in Ukraine.

About ISDRS 2022

Hosts for the conference 2022 is a consortium of six universities based in Stockholm: Ersta Sköndal Bräcke University College, Stockholm School of Economics, Swedish Defence University, Stockholm University of the Arts, Södertörn University and University College Stockholm.

Conference special topic:

The cultural dimensions of sustainable development  based on four keywords: culture, art, human rights and courage.

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT AND COURAGE: CULTURE, ART AND HUMAN RIGHTS

Sustainable development is often referred to by mentioning the ecological, economic and social dimensions of sustainable development. Cultural issues are often brought forward as a widespread suggestion to a fourth dimension, allowing research not only on scientific grounds, but also on artistic grounds.

We come together with a conviction that changes towards a sustainable development need leaders and a leadership that build on courage to break with taken for granted practices and experiences. Not seldom, people leading change are persecuted and human rights are broken.

The conference in Stockholm in 2022 would like to bring forth knowledge, insights and experience from humanities to enrich and exchange with scholars from natural and social sciences; it would like to facilitate knowledge exchange between scholars undertaking research based on scientific grounds and scholars undertaking research based on artistic grounds.

THE ROAD TO 2022

While current ISDRS tracks will be offered as usual we also want to take the opportunity to encourage new collaborations. For the conference we are now looking for a wide range of speakers, panelists and workshop managers. The invitation goes out to researchers and other leading actors in academia, the cultural sector, the public sector, the business community and civil society – everyone is welcome to submit their notice of interest. Our ambition is to bring together researchers active in both scientific and artistic research and to be a meeting place for the exchange of knowledge between the same.

Early on we will work closely with longstanding track chairs and involve local track chairs from the consortium universities to enrich and further develop the research topics and agendas.

On June 14, 2022 a PhD Day will be held, as well as workshops that bring together scholars interested in performing sustainability.

On June 18, 2022 a number of Sustainability tours will be offered, both in the proximity of Stockholm and online.
